Acrylic on canvas 17 x 20″ by Warren Deferbrache, 2024
A solitary, weather-beaten house stands in the middle of a vast wheat field, its faded boards leaning toward a gnarled, lifeless tree that claws at the sky. Overhead, a dour yet unnervingly bright yellow sun sinks toward a line of muted green hills, casting long, twisted shadows across the rippling grain. The air feels heavy with silence, as if the house itself is holding its breath, guarding the echoes of the lives that once filled its rooms—laughter, arguments, whispered secrets—now surrendered to peeling paint, creeping ivy, and the slow, patient advance of weather, wild animals, and restless insects.
