It seems like everywhere I look people are talking about…
- Why am I here
- What is my purpose
- What is the reason for my life
- I need answers about my existence
- and so on
These are perfectly natural questions that we have all asked ourselves. I have come to think that questions like this lead to suffering because they presuppose that they can be answered. So far they can’t.
It’s pretty clear that we are here. The evidence that we evolved over time from lower life forms which themselves evolved, is well established. The fossil record provides a clear enough picture of the process of evolution. But is there a ‘why’ it happened in all that? Assuming that there is a ‘why’ implies agency. Maybe some actor started the process but it is pretty clear that it has run on its own for millions of years. Through astronomy we can clearly see stars like our being formed by the millions and billions. That process clearly happens without any magic hands doing the work.
So demanding to know why we are here opens all kinds of pandora’s boxes. Religion, the occult, strong men and so on. Simply assuming that there is a why leads to all kinds of problems and traps.
What if we decide to live without knowing why? We have the power to bring purpose to our own lives, to make up our own purpose. Or if we are not comfortable with that we can embrace the purpose others with more drive and imagination dream up. Something that fits us.
We USA’ns belong to a country and a culture which can provide purpose through its culture and history. We can have families We have desires which give us purpose and should be followed when possible as long as they don’t hurt ourselves or others.
We need to be strong and look within for purpose. Otherwise we become the pawn of others. Maybe we could work on being comfortable with not knowing everything. We are alive and we are here for a few years, why not enjoy them and be ok with whatever is beyond our scope of understanding. Be at peace.
