No God? I can think of worse things

I am in my sixth decade.  Since I was a child I have been fascinated with the human lifecycle particularly my own.  What happens after death, if anything?  I tried the christian road because I was born to Methodist parents in the Midwest of the United States.  If I were born in the middle east I could have made the same religious journey as a Muslim or a Hindu.

I have also gone down the scientific evidence road because I love science and mathematics (my degree is in computer science with a minor in mathematics).

I consider myself to be an agnostic.  Why not an atheist?  Being an atheist requires a declaration of faith as much as religion does.  The position that there is no god or higher power cannot be proved scientifically.

I think the reality is probably that we end when we die.  It is the simplest and therefore most likely true answer.  We spend our lives building memories, skills, and experience just to have them disappear when our heart stops beating.  Not easy to accept.

The christian road offers mostly well intentioned hope for an after life.  An eternity where we worship god and get to see our relatives again (keep in mind we each have billions of relatives if you go back in time).  This is comforting to some maybe most of my fellow humans.

Given that, it is understandable why most humans suspend logical thinking in some areas of our lives favor of religious doctrine.  But is that the healthy course or should we be braver and face our mortality?  Will humans ever be truly great as a race if we behave like scared rabbits when it comes to facing down death?

Ending of the individual does suck but on the other hand it may be the best of all outcomes currently available to us.

Why is ending the best outcome?  Consider what it was like before we were born?  Not bad right?  Did we worry about anything?  Nope, we passed over every human trial up to the time we were born without a care and in complete safety.  So if death is a similar experience, how bad is that?  It is the ultimate vacation!

But we say, I want to be remembered, I want to leave my mark on the world!

let’s put that desire into perspective. Very few of us have a hope of leaving a lasting mark on the world of man and forget about doing it in our galaxy or the universe at large.  We don’t last and we should accept that humbly.

It is hard to imagine nonexistence.  My god a world without me in it?!?  We won’t have to worry about that because we won’t exist anymore except maybe in the minds of those we leave behind and they won’t exist after while.  We may linger for a few years on the internet, in public records or maybe on a plaque somewhere.  Maybe we even wrote a great book!

Consider if the supernatural does exist and there is no end to our existence?  Go to hell for bad behavior? Who wants to spend time there?  Heaven? you mean where we worship god forever? How boring would that be after the first couple or hours?  Many afterlife possibilities are presented by the worlds religions, the science fiction, and the fantasy communities.  I read a lot, and have come to see that most supernatural after life possibilities are much more horrifying than simple nonexistence.

Am I right, who knows 🙂
